Eloping at Lago di Braies in Dolomites | A Guide to Your Dream Italian Elopement

Eloping at Lago di Braies in the Italian Dolomites feels like stepping into a real-life fairytale. Known for its crystal-clear emerald water, dramatic mountain peaks, and iconic wooden rowboats, this breathtaking alpine lake offers one of the most romantic backdrops in Europe. Couples travel from around the world to exchange vows along the peaceful shoreline, surrounded by towering cliffs and serene forest views. The lake’s still water reflects the mountains like a mirror, creating dreamy photo opportunities at every turn. One of the most popular experiences is renting the lake’s charming wooden rowboats, which allow couples to float across the water for intimate moments and unforgettable portraits. Jacob and I did a boat ride on our honeymoon and it was a dream come true! The scenery changes beautifully throughout the day, from soft morning light and quiet misty views to golden hour glow reflecting off the water—making it a perfect destination for a nature-filled, intimate elopement experience. The photos below were taken midday for reference. Proving that even in midday sunlight, your photos can be extraordinary! There was crowds and lots of rowboats on the water, but nothing a little Photoshop can’t help remedy.

How to Travel to Lago di Braies for Your Elopement | Lodging & Parking

Planning your Lago di Braies elopement is surprisingly simple with a bit of preparation. Jacob and I flew into the Venice airport and rented a car. The lake is located in northern Italy and is most easily reached by car. You can certainly take a bus, but a car will give you more freedom. We drove from a nearby town, Cortina d’Ampezzo, which was only forty five minutes away. The most convenient place to stay is Hotel Lago di Braies, located directly on the lake and offering incredible views just steps from the water. Nearby lodging options also include cozy alpine hotels and guesthouses in surrounding villages like San Vito or Braies. Many couples choose to stay overnight to experience the lake at sunrise, when crowds are minimal and the atmosphere feels especially peaceful and intimate.

Where to Park at Lago di Braies

If you’re driving, note that traffic restrictions may apply during peak summer months, when advance parking reservations are required. Between July 10th and September 10th, there are traffic regulations in Braies Valley. Either pre-book parking at Lago di Braies, or get to the lake before 9 am. During low season (September 10th – July 10th), there are no driving restrictions in Pragser Tal Valley. You can drive all the way to the car parks near the lake. We did not pay in advance and was able to pay on site during the month of October. It costs 15 EUR to park here for 3 hours (as of 2025). Bring cash or a debit card.

Renting Rowboats and Hiking at Lago di Braies

The lake is very accessible. Based on which lot you park at, the lake is at most a ten minute stroll. You can walk right up to the lake, wait on a short line to buy boat tickets. Renting a traditional wooden rowboat at Lago di Braies (La Palafitta) typically costs around 55 EUR for 45minutes for a private boat ride (4-5 people allowed). If you are going to do a romantic boat ride on the lake, I would opt for the private boat and enjoy yourselves. A pleasant surprise was that boat tickets got you magnets as well. As a magnet collector, I was very ecstatic (they gave us two)! A two mile trial wrap around the lake as well for hiking. There is a gift shop and food vendors nearby so bathrooms and food is easy to locate. Jacob and I got the best German hotdog of our lives. Beyond its accessibility, Lago di Braies offers an effortlessly romantic setting that requires little decoration or planning—nature provides everything. The shoreline paths make it easy to find quiet vow locations, while the surrounding Dolomite peaks create a dramatic yet serene atmosphere. The iconic boathouse and rowboats add a timeless European charm, perfect for couples seeking a blend of adventure and elegance. Whether you choose a sunrise ceremony, a private boat ride across the lake, or a simple exchange of vows along the water’s edge, eloping at Lago di Braies creates an unforgettable experience centered on connection, beauty, and intention. This would be a great start to your elopement day before heading to other breathtaking location in the Dolomites!
